Fort Myers Beach sees largest week-to-week uptick in more than a month

The Florida Department of Health put the total number of coronavirus cases confirmed statewide at 576,094 on Monday.

The latest figure represents a 7% increase over the previous week, continuing a week-to-week drop in the rate of new cases over the past month.

The number of cases on Fort Myers Beach rose from 66 to 76, an increase of 15% over the previous week and the largest week-to-week increase in more than a month. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases on Fort Myers Beach has doubled since July 6.

The number of deaths related to COVID-19 statewide has been rising at a consistent rate in recent weeks. The number of deaths related to the coronavirus rose to 9,674 on Monday, an increase of 13% over the previous week. That doesn't mean all of those deaths occurred or were reported by local health facilities on those days but that they were released in the state Department of Health report after reports were processed.

In Lee County, the number of confirmed cases rose by 5% over the previous week from 16,632 to 17,451, mirroring the percentage of new cases reported a week earlier.

The number of deaths documented in Lee County related to COVID-19 rose from 334 to 375 over the previous week, an increase of 12%. The most recent deaths in the county confirmed to have been related to the coronavirus involved a 69-year-old female, 92-year-old female and 92-year-old male on Aug. 13.

Of the 375 Lee County deaths related to COVID-19, 203 were in long-term care facilities.

At Lee Health, the number of patients with COVID-19 stood at 141 on Monday, a decrease from 180 a week ago. Since Friday, its hospital admitted 42 new COVID-19 patients and released 49. On Sunday, Lee Health reported an 18.6%, positivity rate among those tested for the coronavirus which was up from 13.4% a week ago.
