An environmental study public hearing and open house will be held by the Lee County Department of Transportation on plans for the replacement of the Big Carlos Pass Bridge on March 19 at Bay Oaks Recreation Center.

The plans have been in the works for years, Mayor Anita Cereceda said. The public outreach will give residents a better understanding of the project, she said.

"Residents of the south end of this island would prefer to have a lower bridge," Cereceda said. The county will make the new bridge approximately 60 feet high with a broader span, she said.

The open house will begin at 5 p.m. followed by a presentation and comment period at 6 p.m.

According to the county, Big Carlos Bridge was built in 1965 and is need of rehabilitation or replacement.
