Council approves new parking lot

A vacant lot near the Lani Kai Island Resort which was once home to a Sunoco gas station has been approved by the Town of Fort Myers Beach Council to be turned into a paid parking lot.

Amy Markovich, the owner of the property at 1510 Estero Boulevard, said the plan is to construct 43 parking spaces on the site. Markovich said the idea to construct the lot came together fairly recently after "just seeing the parking situation."

The town council has been seeking to solve a parking problem that is heightened during the winter months and which also plays a factor in the bottleneck traffic issues at the town's main intersection at the base of the Matanzas Pass Bridge.

The council rejected a plea in January from the owner of Key Estero Shops to be grandfathered into the town code to continue charging for parking at his commercial property to those parking but not visiting the shops.

Despite Council's action regarding the request to be considered a non-conforming use and to be grandfathered into town zoning to continue his parking operation, the owner Carmen Naccarato has since increased the cost of parking from $10 to $20.

Mayor Anita Cereceda told Naccarato's attorney Steven Hartsell at the January meeting that the property owner should apply for a special exception for the use of the parking lot. Town Manager Roger Hernstadt said Naccarato still has time to do so. He is not yet facing fines for the code violation based on a deadline set by a magistrate overseeing the issue.
