Masters, advanced amateurs compete in sand championship

Ten days of sandsculpting behind the Wyndham Garden Resort came to a close on Sunday.

Thousands turned out for the 32nd Annual American Sandsculpting Championship, which featured an international array of sculptors, from amateur to pro.

Last weekend, master sculptors competed in teams of two, while advanced amateur sculptors crafted solo.

Bruce Phillips and Jihoon Choi won first place in the doubles division with their piece, "Return to Oz", while "Alien Vacation" by Lisa Fewless took the top spot in the advanced amateur competition.

In the first week's master solo division, John Gowdy won first place with "A Tribute to the Wildland Firefighters of California".

Dates for 2019 will be announced in the coming weeks, and photos of all the sculptures will be posted at www.FMBSandSculpting.com.

The winners from the Master Sculptor Doubles Division were:

- 1st Place "Return to Oz" by Bruce Phillips & Jihoon Choi

- 2nd Place "Dreaming Nonna's Bedtime Stories" by John Gowdy & Laura Cimador-Gowdy

- 3rd Place "Connected/Disconnected" by Bert Adams & DeLayne Corbett

- Sculptor's Choice "Return to Oz" by Bruce Phillips & Jihoon Choi

- People's Choice "Return to Oz" by Bruce Phillips & Jihoon Choi

The winners from the Advanced Amateur Division were:

- 1st Place "Alien Vacation" by Lisa Fewless

- 2nd Place "Pucker Up" by Amanda Bolduc
