Party officials are offering both remembrances and condolences.

"Southwest Florida lost a vocal champion for regular people regardless of political affiliation," Charlotte County Democratic Party Chair Patrick Hurley said in a statement posted to the Charlotte County Democrats' website "A fierce environmentalist, April's voice will be missed in the fight for against Rick Scott's lax oversight, reckless disregard for climate issues, and shameful reallocation of resources."

"Our hearts go out to April's husband David, her children, extended family and countless loved ones and supporters," he added. "We grieve with you."

Freeman and her husband had both spent time in the office on Sunday ..."encouraging our canvassers to get out the vote for Democrats," Hurley said in the posted statement.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo also issued a statement.

"We are incredibly saddened by the sudden death of April Freeman." the statement posted to Charlotte County Democrats' website states. "April put her heart and soul into her community - and was dedicated to making a better future for all Floridians.

"Just last night she was in the office making call and working to get out the vote. Her work ethic and passion was an inspiration to all of us. It is a tremendous loss to the Democratic Party and to all who knew her.

"Our hearts break for her family and love ones, who are grieving her loss," the statement reads.

Freeman, 54, had won her party's nomination in the primary and was running against Republican Greg Steube for the seat held by Tom Rooney.

She was running on a platform that promised "a new voice for a new district" focused on veterans, seniors, children and the environment.

A familiar face on the local political scene, Freeman had previously sought public office, including a bid for Cape Coral mayor in 2017.

The Democratic Party is expected to select her replacement for the Nov. 6 ballot.

"The candidate to replace April Freeman's name on the ballot will likely be determined within five days by a committee made up of all of the county Democratic Party chairs in the 17th Congressional District," the Charlotte County Democrats website states.
