For those looking to enjoy some artwork this weekend, there are two great local events taking place depending on whether you'd like to enjoy others' art, or dive in to create your own.
Bayside Pastel Art Show
Bayside Estates resident Julie Valladares is a world-class artist. Originally from New Zealand and equipped with two art degrees, Valladares has commissioned large projects for corporate entities, held various artistic positions for cruise ship companies, city art projects and anything else that allowed her to display her talent, as well as hosting her own art studio and summer art academy for children.
She has since retired, but art runs through her veins, and with some leftover pastels in her personal medium inventory, she started offering classes for Bayside residents who'd like to learn the ropes.
With such great success, and massive student turnout, Julie is proud to host an art show open to the public Sunday, Feb. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the 17601 San Carlos Blvd. community.
"The pastel classes turned out to be very successful. I?have some great artists who are doing fabulous work so much so that I decided to host an art show to show everyone what kind of work the students are doing," Julie said. "There will be 50 or 60 pieces on display Sunday, ranging in a variety of subjects."
Julie likes to really challenge her students, and says she is extremely impressed with the artwork they created.
"Each piece is a challenge it's not easy work, so it's really, really impressive seeing what these girls have created," she said.
During the two-hour showing, guests can enjoy free entry and complimentary wine and cheese. Although pieces are not all commissioned, some of the artists may be intrigued to sell their creations.
"Guests are encouraged to come by and see exactly what can be done with chalk. It's quite an art to make such intricate designs with just a piece of chalk and your finger," Julie said.
Painting with Nettie Price at
the Salty Dog Gallery and Gifts
With such a phenomenal turn out last year, artist Nettie Price returns to the Salty Dog Gallery and Gifts, 1901 Estero Blvd #103, for not one but two more painting sessions this weekend.
The first will be offered Saturday, beginning at 4 p.m., the second hosted at One Flight Up Sunday, at 1 p.m.
"Sue (owner of One Flight Up) was so gracious to host us for the second class this weekend. She and her friends had so much fun during our event last year that she offered to host one of the classes this year,"?said Carla Pine, co-owner of the Salty Dog Gallery and Gifts, along with her husband, Peter, and puppy mascot, Brady.
Each day will offer a different painting, so feel free to attend both.
"Saturday's class will be a repeat performance of the Fish Lips (pictured). It was such a huge success last year, we could have filled up the class three times over. So, with such a desire for Nettie to return, we're starting off with the encore painting," Carla said. "Sunday's painting (at One Flight Up) is called "The Crabby Couple," (pictured)?another fun and whimsical project."
The cost to participate in either class is $40 per person, and includes everything the artist will need, from the canvas, brushes and paint to the complimentary refreshments and wine, and, of course, hands-on instruction by Nettie.
"Nettie makes it so entertaining I had no idea what to expect last year and everyone had so?much fun," Carla said. "And it's so interesting to see how everyone's came out so nice each one different and unique. If you've never held a paintbrush in your hand, you can still come these classes are for all skill levels."
"Come and join us for a great time!" Nettie said. "The Sparkling Art Mobile will be there filled with sparkling art, prints, candles and more. See you then!"
Those wishing to attend either or both courses are encouraged to RSVP?as soon as possible, as seats fill up quickly. Call 239-463-9900 or 239-223-8298.
Carla continues to offer additional classes, courses and unique items from her store through season.
"We just got some new Connie Brown furniture art in, and are planning to host another mermaid-painting class soon," she said.
Other upcoming classes include wine-bottle-painting classes, decoupage project classes, painting techniques, cigar-box-painting classes and custom signs and lettering gatherings. Each class includes some type of fun take-home creation. And, in spite of the recent road construction, there is plenty of parking.
